The Bonheur is a charming four passenger barge that offers charters for small groups in the beautiful Burgundy Region of France. Bonheur is light and spacious with large picture windows, french oak flooring and traditional furnishings. The cabins are ensuit furnished with either Twin or Queen Size beds. Each cabin has individual air conditioning and a central heating system. Outside you have a large hardwood deck area for relaxation and al-fresco dining. Paul & Annie Roberts, the owner/operators of Bonheur have been in the tourism and hospitality industry for over 15 years and have spent the past 5 years cruising with guests on the canals of France. The meaning of Bonhueur is happiness, which is completely true when you cruise on this lovely barge...true happiness! THE BONHEUR WILL NOT BE CRUISING IN 2017.

Sunday 
Welcome Aboard!
Guests are met at Dijon TGV railway station in the afternoon and taken by car to Bonheur, which is moored on the Canal de Bourgogne in the Port of Plombieres-Les-Dijon. Welcome drinks and dinner in the evening gives us the opportunity to chat about the coming weeks itinerary, while you gently unwind from your journey.
 
Monday 
Visit Pont de Pany and Dinner Ashore
This morning we leave Dijon behind us as we cruise out into the countryside towards the picturesque valley of the Ouche. This is a day of cruising where you can relax on board, watching the world go by, but should you wish, there are plenty of opportunities to disembark at one of the many locks to either walk or cycle and explore villages that we pass through. We moor at the quiet village of Pont de Pany for this evening. Tonight you eat ashore at a local restaurant at which we have reserved a table for you.
 
Tuesday 
Dijon Market and Ducal Palace
This morning we take a drive by car into the historic town of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy. After a pleasant guided walk exploring the medieval quarter of the town, including the Ducal Palace and the famous Dijon mustard shop, you will have the opportunity to experience Dijon market day with the atmosphere of a French market at its best. We return to Bonheur for lunch and then this afternoon we take a leisurely cruise to the village of Gissey-sur-Ouche. This evening you have another opportunity to eat ashore at one of the restaurants that we have reserved for you.
 
Wednesday 
Lunch Ashore and Grand Cru Wine Tasting
We have put today aside to explore a little further afield from the canal by car. In the morning we drive to the delightful town of Beaune, the historic wine capital of Burgundy. You will enjoy a visit to the famous Hotel Dieu, Hospice de Beaune built in 1446 and have the opportunity to stroll around and visit the shops. For lunch we have arranged for you to experience the hospitality of Olivier LeFlaive in the famous wine village of Puligny-Montrachet. During a four course lunch (which is included in the charter price) you will sample 10 different wines including premier Cru and a Grand Cru wine. After lunch we will take the scenic drive over the hills and into the valley back to Bonheur. This evening you eat aboard.
 
Thursday 
Lunch at La Bussiere and Village visit of Chateaneuf-en-Auxois
This morning we gently cruise to the village of La Bussiere. After lunch aboard we take a drive to the hilltop village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois. This medieval village has a magnificent chateau with fortress which was used by one of the Dukes of Burgundy with its high vantage point giving stunning views over the surrounding countryside and the canal far below. This evening we have made a reservation for our guests to eat at the Michelin starred restaurant of the Abbaye de la Bussiere, one of the highlights of the week. This beautiful estate has been transformed from a Cistercian abbey into a wonderful hotel where you will dine in style.
 
Friday 
Chateau Visit and Wine Tasting
This morning we cruise to the final village on our canal route called Pont d'Ouche. On this part of the canal we pass through small villages and stunning countryside. This afternoon after lunch aboard, we take a drive to the medieval chateau of Clos de Vougeot which is surrounded by vineyards. This Chateau is the headquarters of the Chavalier de Tastevin whose special label is awarded annually to the finest Cote d'Or vintages. After our tour of the Chateau we drive to the famous wine village of Nuits St George which has just celebrated its 800th anniversary and guests will have the opportunity for a wine tasting before we return to Bonheur. This evening, guests eat aboard.
 
Saturday 
Breakfast and Farewell
After a wonderful week, a leisurely breakfast and a sad farewell, guests are taken to Dijon TGV Railway Station in good time to catch their train.

SAMPLE MENU

A light bed of mesclun salad leaves laced with pieces of ripe pear and Roquefort cheese, sprinkled with caramelised walnuts and served with a Dijon mustard and walnut dressing. Accompanied with walnut bread.

 

Wine pairing of Pouilly Fuisse (a crisp white wine from Chardonnay grape)

 

MAIN 

Salmon en Papillotte.

Fresh wild salmon paves gently poached in individual parcels with a bed of sliced lemon and topped with freshly chopped herbs,  sautéed leeks and crème fraiche. Served with steamed asparagus spears and buttered new potatoes.

 

CHEESES

An interesting selection of local cheese.

Epoisse – Creamy deliciously strong flavor

A local farm Chevre ( goats cheese)– Soft and light in flavour

Compte – A stronger more mature cheese with an affinage of 12-18 months

 

Wine pairing of Montagny 1er Cru ( Again a chardonnay grape with a more mineral taste)

 

DESSERT

Homemade Mousse au Chocolat

Delightful little pots of mousse made with the finest French chocolate and cognac. Served with fresh fruits, Raspberry coulis and Langue de Chat biscuits.

Cruise cost includes

Six night accommodations, pickup and drop off at a designated meeting point in Dijon, all meals except three dinners which will taken off the barge at your expense (Captain will make reservations and provide transportation), all wines with lunch and dinner served onboard, daily escorted excursions and use of onboard bicycles

Airfare to and from your destination, cancellation insurance and crew gratuity (suggested minimum amount is 5% of the cruise price)
